TYPE OF TOURNAMENT:​ 

The Scholastic Chess of Indiana Team Championships is 4-player fixed-roster teams (minimum of 3 players to form a team). The tournament will be conducted using the Swiss System (no elimination – score determines final place). All teams will play all day. Scores do not carry over to the finals. The top scoring teams will advance to the State Finals.

ELIGIBILITY:​ 

Any accredited school in Indiana may send any number of teams to compete in the Regional tournaments. Teams consist of 3-6 full-time students attending the same school.  Schools that share facilities but have different Indiana Department of Education numbers on this website are considered to be different schools: https://inview.doe.in.gov/state/1088000000/school-list. Home schools and virtual schools are not 
eligible. A parent or school sponsor must accompany the group to the competition.

USCF MEMBERSHIP​:

The Regional tournaments are NOT rated by the U.S. Chess Federation. However, the State Finals are USCF rated. If your team(s) qualify for the State Finals, all players on the State Finals team(s) must join USCF. Instructions will be included in your State Finals qualifier letter.

IMPORTANT RULES:

  1. All rounds in the SCI Team Championships consist of 4-board matches. Teams of 4 players compete against each other in each round. A team can compete in a round with a minimum of 3 players. Teams are allowed to have 2 alternate players.
  2. A student may play only for the school that he/she attends full-time and may play in only one division. Please see “ELIGIBILITY” above. You may choose your Regional; however, all teams from a school must attend the same regional.
  3. The tournament will be divided into four divisions: 12th Grade & Under, 8th Grade & Under, 6th Grade & Under, and 3rd Grade & Under. (12th Grade & Under do not play in the Regional tournaments.) A separate registration form for 12th Grade & Under will be available at a later date.
  4. 8th Grade & Under Rule: Approximately 32 teams from the Regionals will qualify for the SCI Team State Championships.
  5. 6th Grade & Under Rule: Approximately 40 teams from the Regionals will qualify for the SCI Team State Championships.
  6. 3rd Grade & Under Rule: All teams that compete in the Regionals will be invited to the SCI Team State Championships.

STARTING AND ENDING TIMES:​ 

Please be at the Regional location and in the building ready to play by 8:30am (local time). Each Regional will begin with a players’ meeting and first round play will begin immediately afterward, usually at 9:00am. Play should be completed between 3:00-5:00 p.m., depending on the size of the regional. (Note: Hammond is in the Central time zone. All others are Eastern time.)

AWARDS:​ 

At the R​egional level, trophies will be awarded to the top 3 ​schools​ in 8​th​ & Under, ​​6th & Under, and 3rd & Under. At the State Finals, trophies will be awarded to the top 10 schools in 12th & Under, 8th & Under, 6th & Under, and 3rd & Under.

EQUIPMENT:​ 

The Regional hosts will provide sets, but not chess clocks. Players may wish to bring a clock to use during the competition. However, players are not required to bring chess sets.

FOOD:​ 

Food is available for purchase at most of the Regional sites. In most cases, food will be served by local groups, or you may wish to eat in nearby restaurants.

There are a few special requirements and rules that team sponsors, coaches, and parents should be aware of. A regional fact sheet with specific information about team chess and your regional location will be available for download on this website. The team roster form will also be available for download on this website.

ENTRY DEADLINE AND FEES:

All entries for Regional competitions have passed. Entries for the 12U section will begin after February 24, 2024. The entry fee is $48 for 12U teams. Teams qualifying for the state finals from regional competitions must confirm their entry by March 16, 2024. The Finals entry fee for qualifying 3U, 6U, and 8U teams is $30.
