We are very excited to host you again this year! We know that scholastic tournaments, especially team tournaments can be a bit hectic, especially before the first round. Below are a few helpful tips to help you and your chess player(s) have a great day at the Team Finals!
If you would like to know more about Martinsville, including driving directions, hotel accommodations, shopping, and restaurants, please click here.
Arriving and Parking:
Martinsville High School has a large parking lot in front of the main entrance and parking around the side and back of the building. We have volunteers driving a golf cart to help visitors who might have to park further away from the front door. We suggest arriving by 8am so everyone can find a place to sit for the day.
Look for orange signs posted throughout the building to help you find your way around Martinsville High School.
Free Wi-Fi is Available on the “Guest” Network. No Password Required.
Find Your Skittles Area for Waiting Between Rounds:
We have two “skittles” areas where players, parents, and coaches can wait while their kids play chess. It is your choice where you would like to sit.
- Main Gym Skittles Area – This is closer to the matchplay area but all seating is upstairs. This area tends to have a bit more space and is quieter than other parts of the building. There is elevator access.
- Cafeteria Skittles Area – This is a longer walk from the matchplay area, but it is on the first floor. This area is closer to food and local shops.
- Private Rooms Are Available to Rent – Details here
Regardless of which room you use, we will have volunteers to help you know when pairings are posted. We also recommend you sign up for announcements via the Remind App. Details are below.
Pairings are Posted in Three Locations and on the Remind App
Printed Pairings: We will print pairings and hang them on the wall in three locations: (1) The Hallway Outside the Cafeteria, (2) The First Floor of the Main Gym, (3) The Fieldhouse Hallway Outside the Match Play Area.
Remind App: Is the most convenient way to see pairings for each round. Download the app to your phone or go to www.remind.com to log in. Once there, join the “class” that corresponds to division your chess team is playing in by using the codes below:
- Third Grade and Under – Remind class code: @sciteam3u
- Sixth Grade and Under – Remind class code: @sciteam6u
- Eighth Grade and Under – Remind class code: @sciteam8u
- Twelfth Grade and Under – Remind class code: @sciteam12u
The Fieldhouse is Where Match Play Happens
All chess matches will take place in the Fieldhouse. This is a large gymnasium at one end of our high school Please allow 7 minutes to check your team pairings and walk from your skittles area to the Fieldhouse. Once you arrive, you can make sure your team is seated in the right place and then you can leave the matchplay area.
Parents and coaches are not allowed in the matchplay area. However, the fieldhouse has a large window at one end that will allow you to see some of what is happening inside. Please understand that we want the matchplay area to be as quiet as possible to allow our chess players to focus on the games.

Passing Time Between Rounds
We know that chess tournaments can be boring at times if you are not playing matches. That’s why we will have a few things to do and explore while you are on site:
- The “Well” Hallway – Located between the Main Gym and the Cafeteria is where we will have local shops set up for you to check out. Look for unique items and chess gear. Click here for more info.
- Food Truck Circle – Located outside the building using the doors at the south end of the Well Hallway. We have local food trucks on the circle drive. Click here for more info.
- Auxillary Gym or “Steam Room” – Between the Main Gym and the Fieldhouse, we will have a gymnasium open with basketballs and soccer balls available. If your chess player needs to burn off a little steam between rounds, this is your place.
- Concession Stands – Will be available in the Well Hallway and in the Main Gym Skittles Area on the second floor.
- Marian University Table – Marian University (www.marian.edu) is proud sponsor of Scholastic Chess of Indiana. Please visit their information table in the cafeteria and discover what Marian has to offer.
Restroom Locations
- Well Hallway – In the hallway with access to local shops and food trucks.
- Main Gym – On the first floor next to the basketball court where the awards ceremonies will take place.
- Fieldhouse Hallway – In the hallway just outside the entrance to the matchplay area.
Awards Ceremonies
We will have the trophies set up on the basketball court in the Main Gym. Our awards ceremonies will take place as soon as an each division completes play. Feel free to sit in the bleachers and cheer our players. Your enthusiasm matters a lot to the kids. Please come and cheer even if you can!

We are really happy to host you! Thank you for supporting your kids as they play chess!
