If you are looking for information about the 2026 tournament, please click <a href=\"https:\/\/scichessin.org\/26SCIInd.html\" title=\"\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Do not hesitate to email us at <a href=\"mailto:scichessin@gmail.com\"><strong>scichessin@gmail.com<\/strong><\/a> if anything is unclear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Eligibility: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Any K-12th grade student who is a resident of Indiana may participate in this tournament.  Public, private, and home-schooled students are eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Tournament Organization:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Players can enter one of 8 sections described below.&nbsp; Championship sections will be USCF rated and competition will occur at the State Finals only.&nbsp; Junior Varsity and Youth sections will compete in qualifying Regionals that are not USCF rated.&nbsp; Players who advance to the Finals from Junior Varsity or Youth sections must have a valid USCF ID (details below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Championship Sections:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Championship sections are for Indiana\u2019s top scholastic chess players.&nbsp; Winners in each championship section receive a college scholarship and the right to represent Indiana at a US Chess national tournament.&nbsp; Players entered in these sections <strong>DO NOT <\/strong>play in Regional Qualifying tournaments.&nbsp; These sections will compete at Hammond Central High School in Hammond, Indiana on January 25, 2025.&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You must have a valid USCF ID to play in these sections.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>High School Championship<\/strong>:&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">9-12<\/span> grade players with a USCF rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1400<\/span> or higher compete for the <strong>$2000 Teddy Jacobi Scholarship<\/strong> and entry to the <strong>Denker National Tournament of High School State Champions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Middle School Championship<\/strong>:&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">6-8<\/span> grade players with a USCF rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1000<\/span> or higher compete for the <strong>$1000 Billy Colias Scholarship<\/strong> and entry to the <strong>Barber National Tournament of Middle School State Champions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Elementary School Championship<\/strong>:&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">K-5<\/span> grade players with a USCF rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">750<\/span> or higher compete for the <strong>$1000 Brian Yamin Scholarship<\/strong> and entry to the <strong>Rockefeller National Tournament of Elementary School State Champions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Junior Varsity Sections:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These sections give Indiana\u2019s up-and-coming chess players the opportunity to compete at a high level and win a state title.&nbsp; Players entered in these sections <strong>MUST<\/strong> play at one of five Regional Qualifying tournaments.&nbsp; Regional dates and locations are listed later in this flyer.&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Regional rounds of these sections are not USCF rated, but the Finals rounds are USCF rated.<\/span>&nbsp; <em>Players who win all their matches in the Regional tournament will be invited to &#8220;play up&#8221; in the Championship section for their age group at the State Finals.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>High School Junior Varsity:<\/strong>&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">9-12<\/span> grade players with a USCF rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1399<\/span> or lower, or unrated, are eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Middle School Junior Varsity<\/strong>:&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">6-8<\/span> grade players with a USCF rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">999<\/span> or lower, or unrated, are eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Elementary School Junior Varsity<\/strong>:  <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">5th grade and under<\/span> players with a USCF rating of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">749 <\/span>or lower, or unrated, are eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Youth Sections:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">These sections give Indiana\u2019s youngest chess players an opportunity to get tournament experience while competing for a state title.&nbsp; Players entered in these sections <strong>MUST<\/strong> play at one of five Regional Qualifying tournaments.&nbsp; Regional dates and locations are listed later in this flyer. &nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Regional rounds of these sections are not USCF rated, but the Finals rounds are USCF rated.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>3rd Grade and Under<\/strong>:&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">3rd grade and under<\/span> chess players are eligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"\"><strong>1st Grade and Under<\/strong>:&nbsp; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1st grade and under<\/span> chess players are eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>USCF Ratings Determination:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Eligibility for Championship, Junior Varsity, and Youth Sections will be determined by a student\u2019s Regular US Chess Federation rating on the January 2025 rating list.&nbsp; Rounds will be determined by the&nbsp; number of participants in each section. All players will play all rounds \u2013 no player is ever eliminated.&nbsp; Regional sections might be combined by the tournament director if there is a low number of entrants, but players will remain eligible to qualify for the state finals in the section they entered.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Regional Players Qualifying for Finals:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">At the conclusion of each section at the Regional, finalists will be announced by the tournament staff.&nbsp; The number of finalists from each region will be determined based on the number of players and the strength of each region.&nbsp; <em>Please be aware that players who advance to State Finals will be given a packet of information.
