3/29/2008 Scholastic Chess of Indiana Team State Finals Nearly 600 scholastic chess players competed in the 39th annual Scholastic Team Chess Championships at Honey Creek Middle School in Terre Haute Saturday, March 29, 2008. Competing in teams of four players (plus alternates), scholastic state team champions were crowned in four different divisions. In the High School Division (12th Grade & Under), Terre Haute South Vigo High School led from start to finish, having the advantage of “draw odds” going into the final match. They needed it, as they drew their final match with Lafayette Jefferson High School to finish with 4.5 out of 5 matches. Team members were Krista Selby, E.G. Wright III, Sangeeth Jeevan, Brennan Chung, and Sarah Selby. Krista Selby and Wright were also members of the 2005 and 2006 state championship teams. Concord High School was the runnerup for the second year in a row. Goshen Middle School won the Middle School Division (8th Grade & Under). They won 4.5 of their 5 matches, giving up a draw to Honey Creek Middle School. Goshen team members were Clancy Short, Ben Kragt, Aaron Johnson, and Evan Grimes. Short won all 5 of his games on Board 1, and Grimes won all 5 of his games on Board 4. Sycamore School of Indianapolis pulled off a “three-peat”, taking all 5 of their matches to win the 6th Grade & Under division for the third year in a row. Sycamore team members were Jeffrey Cheng, Alexander Crich, Josh Segaran, and Elaina Vohra. Crich won all 5 of his games on Board 2, and Segaran won all 5 of his games on Board 3. Cheng, Crich, and Segaran were also members of Sycamore’s 2007 championship team. In addition, Cheng and Crich were part of Sycamore’s 2006 3rd Grade & Under Championship team, and Cheng also played on the 2005 3rd & Under championship team. Dixie Bee Elementary of Terre Haute won the Primary Division (3rd Grade & Under). They won 5.5 out of 6 matches, giving up a draw to Elliott Elementary. Dixie Bee team members were Rohit Nagaraj, Chaman Kumar, Rishi Patel, and Amit Chakrabarti. Nagaraj won all 6 of his games on Board 1, and Chakrabarti won all 6 of his games on Board 4.
