1/28/2012 Scholastic Chess of Indiana Individual State Finals Scholastic state champions were crowned in six divisions, and $4000 in scholarships was awarded in the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) rated tournament. Top-rated 9th grader Sean Vibbert of Evansville won the high school division (12th Grade & Under) with 4.5 points out of 5. With a Master and three Experts topping the field of 32, the final two rounds were especially challenging. Vibbert and 10th grader Sameer Manchanda, both previous winners of the 9th & Under division, fought to a draw in the last round, with Vibbert winning on tie breaks. He won the Paul “Teddy” Jacobi $2000 scholarship (Jacobi), and will be Indiana's representative to the Arnold Denker Tournament of High School Champions, an annual competition which brings together the high school champions from each of the 50 states. This was Vibbert’s sixth championship; he was the 9th & Under Champion in 2010, the 6th & Under Champion in 2008 and 2007, and 3rd & Under Champion in 2006 and 2005. Vibbert has now won $5000 in SCI scholarships. In the 9th Grade & Under Championship division, top-seeded seventh grader Jonathan Zhou of Fort Wayne was the clear winner with 5 out of 5 games. His win garnered him the $1,000 Billy Colias Scholarship (Colias). Zhou will also be Indiana’s representative to the Barber K-8 Tournament of State Champions, hosted by USCF. He has now won $3000 in SCI scholarships, winning the 6th Grade & Under Championship in 2011 and 2009. Fourth grader Kevin Wang of Fort Wayne was a first time champion, winning the 6th Grade & Under Championship division. Wang won all 5 of this games, capturing the $1,000 Brian Yamin Scholarship (Yamin). The 3rd Grade & Under division was won by third grader Lance Wells of Indianapolis with 5.5 out of 6 games. This was Wells’ first SCI championship. The 9th Grade & Under Junior Varsity division (open to players with a USCF rating under 1000) resulted in a tie. Joe Delagrange of St. Joe drew Nathan Welling with 4.5 points each out of 5. Delagrange won the title on tie breaks. Remarkably, this was Delagrange’s first USCF-rated tournament. The 6th Grade & Under Junior Varsity division (open to players with a USCF rating under 750) also had a new champion. Sixth grader Dalton Dove of Plymouth won all 5 of his games to place clear first. The local site coordinator was Jerry Ritchie. Chief Tournament Director was Steve Steppe. E-mail for further details.
